soul speaks through music, and what I'm feeling inside can bring out
a song. When this happens, the composition simply ‘flows’
from me. I love to listen and receive—to ‘take down’
the song. I sit down at the piano and let my fingers start to play
things I’ve never heard before. I might be standing in a room
or driving my car and hear a melody. Then, as I sit down at my piano
each evening, I play what I have heard.” |

to play the piano on my grandpa’s grand piano when I was eight.
He lived next door to us, and he was my first piano teacher—and
also the best one I’ve ever had! I had such a good experience
learning to play, it isn’t a chore when I sit down to compose.
I love playing the piano, and I especially love to sit at the grand
piano that was left to me. So many of my compositions come to me as
I sit down to play.”
